Drug Found to Delay Type-1 Diabetes:
Diabetes is one of the most common lifestyle disorder these days. With sedentary work occupying a major portion of the day, it has grown at a very rapid pace. India, in particular, has seen the rise of diabetes at an alarming pace.
What is Diabetes?
As a leman, diabetes is a disease that occurs when our blood sugar levels become too high. Having too much of blood glucose can lead to multiple health problems. Till date, diabetes is a non-curable disorder but can be survived by effective lifestyle changes and appropriate medications. Insulin, a hormone made by the pancreas, helps carbohydrates(later glucose) from food get into our cells to be used for energy. Sometimes our body doesn’t make enough—or any—insulin or doesn’t utilize insulin well. Glucose then stays in your blood and doesn’t reach our cells.

Type of Diabetes
Diabetes is of two types- Diabetes Mellitus and Diabetes Insipidus, commonly known as Type2 and Type 1 diabetes.
Type 1 diabetes

If a patient has type 1 diabetes, their body does not make insulin. Their immune system attacks and destroys the cells in their pancreas that produce insulin. Type 1 diabetes is usually diagnosed in children and young adults; however, it can appear at any age. People with type 1 diabetes need to take insulin every day to stay alive.
Type 2 diabetes

If someone has type 2 diabetes, their body does not make or utilize insulin well. One can develop type 2 diabetes at any age, even during childhood. However, this type of diabetes occurs most often in middle-aged and older people. Type 2 is the most common type of diabetes.
The latest discovery for diabetes patients:

Apart from effective management, a recently discovered drug claims to delay the onset of diabetes by 1-2 years. The research was conducted in the US and aims to slow down the progression of diseases by strengthening the immune system.
In high-risk candidates, 14 days of therapy with the experimental drug Teplizumab delayed development of the disease by a year or more, as reported by a study presented on Sunday at an American Diabetes Association meeting in San Francisco.

What do the experts say about the new drug?

According to Dr. Kevan Herold who is a professor of immunology and endocrinology at Yale University, “This is a huge milestone. We’ve had trials that have been going on for a couple of decades, but they have not been able to prevent diabetes. It was a very disappointing result in the field,”. He also went on to say that it is the first successful trial to prove that Type 1 diabetes can be delayed and possibly prevented in the future.

This is certainly a boon for many, especially young children who are at constant risk due to a history of diabetes in their family. We will have to wait for the drug to be officially launched and used by a larger number of people to derive a solid conclusion. However, it still is a huge achievement and a ray of hope for many.
