India celebrated it’s 70th Republic Day. This day is a celebration of our constitution, citizens and capabilities. The day India attained Purna Swaraj. This year the President will award Ashok Chakra posthumously to a soldier who was once an insurgent. It is noteworthy that Ashok Chakra is the highest peacetime gallantry award given to a soldier. Lance Naik Nazir Wani who lost his life in November 2018 while guarding the country in Jammu and Kashmir’s Shopian encounter will be honored this year. Wani was an insurgent in the 1990s who gave up terrorism and joined the Indian Army in 2004.

Wani had joined 162 Territorial Army battalion in Kashmir and was a recipient of Sena Medal twice in 2007 and in August last year. Before joining the Indian Army, Wani was part of Ikhwan, a counter-insurgency force formed in the 1990s.Ikhwans were the militants who fought militants. They were also said to be India sponsored counter terrorism militants.

His wife Mehjabeen will receive the award from President Ram, Nath Kovind on the Republic Day in Delhi. The operation for which Ashok Chakra is being given is the fierce encounter that took place between the militants and armymen in Shopian. It was during this encounter that the “district commander” of the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Toiba was eliminated. 6 militants in total were killed during this operation at Batagund in Shopian district on November 25 last year.

In the ensuing gunfight, he was hit multiple times, including in the head. Wani sustained bullet injuries during the encounter. He was provided immediate first aid and was evacuated to 92 Base Hospital, but unfortunately succumbed to his injuries.

The Braveheart from Kulgam district of South Kashmir was a highly celebrated soldier. Lance Naik Nazir Wani was 38 and belonged to Cheki Ashmuji village of Kulgam Tehsil in Kulgam. He is survived by his wife and two children Athar (20) and Shaid (18).

He shunned violence having realized its futility and assisted the forces in its endeavor against terrorism. His indomitable courage and bravery led to many successful operations,”

a defense official said in Srinagar. “He always had the interest of the nation in his heart. He operated with Rashtriya Rifles units in Kashmir. Throughout his active life he always willingly faced grave potential threats and was a source of inspiration for others,” said one of his colleagues.
