Following an outstanding rookie campaign, Alabama safety Caleb Downs has entered the transfer portal, with Georgia, per CBS Sports, emerging as the "clear favourite" to acquire his services.
Caleb Downs, an outstanding defensive back in the SEC, earned the title of Freshman of the Year for the Crimson Tide squad that advanced to the College Football Playoffs.
As the Alabama starter in the season opener, he lived up to the anticipation he generated during his high school recruiting season.
He earned 107 tackles and two interceptions for the season, earning him a spot on the FWAA Freshman All-American and second-team All-SEC teams.
His Pro Football Focus coverage grade of 88.9 ranked first in the conference among all safeties. Additionally, he made programme history as the first Alabama freshman to lead the team in tackles.
Given his history with Alabama-hired co-defensive coordinator and safeties coach Travaris Robinson, Georgia is Downs' likely destination. Robinson is a recognised SEC coach, and his friendship with Downs makes UGA a perfect fit.
Downs played for Mill Creek High School in Hoschton, Georgia, less than an hour from Athens, and highly considered the Bulldogs out of high school.
If a Georgia move fails, the standout defensive back may play for Ohio State. Alabama will miss Downs, a defensive staple for years. The Crimson Tide will need other players to replace Downs.
