Sania Mirza – Tennis Journey

Turning Point

The Wimbledon girl’s doubles victory was a watershed moment in Sania Mirza’s tennis career. Sania established her presence not just in Indian tennis but also on the international stage by claiming the Wimbledon girl’s doubles title.

Early Promise

Sania made her international debut in 1999, representing India at the International Junior Championship in Jakarta. She has also made it to the semifinal stage of the French Open girls’ doubles and the second round of the Wimbledon girls’ singles.

Sania Mirza – Playing Style

Mirza is an aggressive baseliner with a powerful groundstroke who is recognised for using her groundstrokes to set up good attacks. Her key strengths are her forehand and volleying abilities. Her domineering personality has attracted parallels to Romanian legend Ilie Năstase.

She is also an excellent serve returner, with several return victories throughout matches. Mirza looks for the winners which means she looks at a variety of angles. Mirza has said that “There’s no doubt that my forehand and backhand can match anyone, it’s about the place that they’re put in. I can hit the ball as hard as anyone can”. She also added, “I’m not that fast on my feet”.

Sania Mirza’s most obvious flaw is her ability to move around the court, where Mirza typically problems getting up and around the court. Mirza’s second serves and limited mobility are frequently cited as her major flaws. A series of injuries, however, effectively curtailed her singles career by 2012.

Sania Mirza – Strengths and Weaknesses

Sania Mirza is a highly aggressive player who has one of the game’s largest forehands. She can dominate any rally by driving her forehand into the corners, and she can hit wins off the wing even from defensive positions.

Sania’s backhand is effective, but her serve is vulnerable and inconsistent. Her movement is also not the best, which hinders her throughout extended rallies and matches.

Sania Mirza – Controversies

Short Skirt Controversy

Sania Mirza attracted criticism from various Muslim religious organisations during her career for the short tennis outfit she wore during matches. Even a Muslim official said that women’s tennis attire was unsuitable for Muslims. Later, Jamiat-ulema-e-Hind emphasised that no one is barred from taking part in games.

Threat Call Controversy

Mohammed Ashraf, 28, a civil engineering student, was arrested in July 2008 for allegedly creating threatening phone calls to Sania and raising a commotion at her home in an attempt to persuade her to break off her engagement to Sohrab Mirza. She purportedly got threatening messages in texts and calls from a young man who professed to love her and asked her to cancel their engagement.

Sania’s father allegedly had a falling out with Ashraf after he went to her Banjara Hills home and requested him to call off their engagement because he had been in love with her.

Marriage Controversy

Sania Mirza Husband Shoaib Malik

Sania was referred to as Pakistan’s “daughter-in-law” by Telangana BJP leader K Laxman on July 23, 2013, because she is married to Pakistani player Shoaib Malik. Given the state’s recent establishment, Laxman questioned her suitability for serving as Telangana’s brand ambassador. Sania went to considerable measures on her social networking site to “prove her Indianness,” even though no justification was necessary.

Saying that she would be an Indian “until the end of her life.” She explained, “I’m married to Mr Shoaib Malik, a Pakistani.” I am an Indian and will remain so until the end of my days. She is content with her married life and enjoys spending time with her family. She adores her country and her family.

Sania Mirza and Shoaib Malik Divorce

Sania Mirza, the Indian tennis star and former wife of Pakistani cricketer Shoaib Malik, has reportedly divorced him. A family source confirmed it was a “khula,” a Muslim woman’s right to unilaterally dissolve the marriage. This comes just hours after Malik announced his marriage to actress Sana Javed. Their union sparks curiosity, as they’ve collaborated on projects and are known associates.

Rumors of a rift between Shoaib and Sania had been swirling for years, fueled by rare public appearances together. Despite speculation, neither officially confirmed a split. Malik even dodged questions about her on Pakistani TV. Their marriage began in 2010 and led to a son, Ihzaan, who currently lives with Sania. Notably, this is also Javed’s second marriage. Previously, she tied the knot with singer Umair Jaiswal in 2020.

Before Malik’s surprise marriage announcement, rumors of a connection between him and Sana Javed had already begun to swirl. Last year, the whispers grew louder when Malik publicly wished Javed a happy birthday on social media. He even shared a picture of them together, adding fuel to the fire. “Happy Birthday Buddy,” the cricket star wrote, sending fans into a frenzy of speculation.

This simple birthday message, coupled with their known collaborations on TV shows and commercials, sparked questions about the nature of their relationship.

Ration Card Controversy

This debate was quite entertaining. Sania’s image was visible on her white ration card, which entitles a family to rice at a substantially reduced rate of Rs 2 per kilogram, in addition to benefits from social security, health insurance, and a fixed dwelling. This card was given to Laxmi of the Vizianagaram district.
