1. Winners of First Season of IPL: Rajasthan Royals
Year | 2008 |
Finals | 1 June |
Stadium | DY Patil Stadium, Navi Mumbai |
The inaugural IPL stormed the cricket world and rekindled an unimaginable vigor in the game. With eight teams playing, each housing power hitters and master bowlers, it became hard for the viewers at the beginning to determine who would win this exciting, never-seen-before tournament. Nonetheless, Rajasthan Royals emerged as the megastar of this T20 ultimate clash. Out of fourteen matches, it won 11 and amassed one of the highest league stage points – 22, with a net run rate of 0.632.

Irony played out very well in the first season. Rajasthan Royals was considered weak and imbalanced after it met a brutal defeat at the hands of Delhi Daredevils. Following an enthralling turn of events, thanks to Shane Warne’s brilliant captaincy and Shane Watson’s fearless batting, RR decimated one opponent after another. When it comfortably entered the finals beating another phenomenal team in the series, Kings XI Punjab, RR met Chennai Super Kings. Captained by the costliest player of the year’s auction, MS Dhoni, CSK offered a tough competition till the last breath, but to no avail. The Royals chose to bowl first on winning the toss. CSK set a target of 164, losing five wickets. The game was tense as it became a last-ball match.
At the end, losing seven wickets and almost losing hope of victory, RR finished as champions. Yusuf Pathan was rightfully declared Man of the Match for picking three wickets at an economy of 5.50 and even scoring a blistering half-century. To view the complete scorecard, go to this link. To date, Rajasthan Royals has lifted the trophy only once among all the other IPL winners.

2. Winners of Second Season of IPL: Deccan Chargers
Year | 2009 |
Finals | 24 May |
Stadium | New Wanderers Stadium, Johannesburg |
Everybody looked keen to find out the next team to inscribe their name on the IPL winners list. The result was an unbelievable surprise. The worst losers of the last season had claimed the trophy for themselves, like a furious bull chasing a red flag. Yes, Deccan Chargers who somehow made it to the playoffs in this season, due to a positive net run rate, lifted the IPL trophy in the second season.

During the league stage, DC amassed 14 points, winning half the matches they played. The team rode on the backs of a few emerging Indian players such as Rohit Sharma and legends like Adam Gilchrist, the skipper, and Andrew Symonds. One would be wrong if he or she believed that everything smoothened up for the Chargers on entering the Playoffs. In fact, the semi-finals became a bigger challenge. They had to face the season masters Delhi Daredevils, who stood at the top of the Points Table. Grateful to Gilchrist’s life-saving 35-ball 85, DC made it to the finals.
In the finals, DC met Royal Challengers Bangalore. Confident to chase a score at the New Wanderers Stadium, RCB chose to field. Tragedy hit as Gilchrist got out for a duck in the very first over. Anil Kumble-led bowling side halted DC at a below-par final score of 143. However, DC’s bowling trio of Ojha, Symonds, and RP Singh came to the rescue and fulfilled the pledge of bringing glory back home. Another name was added to IPL winners list. 3. Winners of Third Season of IPL: Chennai Super Kings
Year | 2010 |
Finals | 25 April |
Stadium | DY Patil Stadium, Navi Mumbai |
The success of Chennai Super Kings in the third season was like a heroic comeback. Losing five matches in the first half of seven matches, CSK showed early signs of falling off the race. But then came the firefighters, Murali Vijay and Suresh Raina. What seemed like an uphill task became a platform for the yellow lions to exhibit their proficiency. They won four out of the next five games. However, they met defeat at their home ground against Delhi Daredevils. This meant CSK had to win its last league match at Dharamshala against KXIP. MS Dhoni swung his bat scoring 54 runs from 29 balls and ensured a spot at the Playoffs.

In the Semifinals, they met the former champs Deccan Chargers. Doug Bollinger’s fantastic bowling spell helped the Chennai boys to stop the Chargers at a shy score of 104. After a comfortable entry to the finals, they faced the season-stormers-Mumbai Indians. With Raina’s fifty and Albie Morkel’s finishing strokes, CSK posted a challenging total of 168. They now had to defend their target against Tendulkar’s masterstrokes. Dreams of victory for the Mumbaikars seemed closer than ever when Pollard unleashed his power, hitting to the stands at a strike of 250. But Morkel put him to rest and CSK 22 runs. Economy bowling by R. Ashwin and Muralitharan won much praise as CSK rose to the list of Indian Premier League winners. Take a look at the scoreboard on this link.

4. Winners of Fourth Season of IPL: Chennai Super Kings
Year | 2011 |
Finals | 28 May |
Stadium | M. A. Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai |
The Chennai lions roared for the second time in two years. The previous year champions, following the newly introduced guidelines, retained MS Dhoni, Suresh Raina, Murali Vijay and Albie Morkel. To keep the team intact, the franchise bought back the stars like Bollinger, Hussey, Ashwin and Badrinath. Another interesting addition to the league was the two new teams Pune Warriors India and Kochi Tuskers Kerala. This meant a tougher competition. Everyone expected a new name in the list of Indian Premier League winners.

Again, the beginning got a bit strained, CSK lost three of its initial five matches. The defending champs appeared at the bottom of the Points Table. Thereon, things began to change. Every player under Dhoni’s magnificent captaincy revived their full potential. As a result, CSK grabbed seven victories in the following eight matches.
In the semi-finals, CSK faced the season stars of RCB. Powered by the ABD-Gayle-Kohli trio, everything fell under the Challengers’ ambit but not a victory against the Lions. After beating them at the semi-finals, CSK once again saw the persistent Challengers gearing up at the finale. This time, the Lions gave a jaw-breaking response. Hussey and Vijay built up a formidable partnership of 133 runs. A final total of 205 allowed the yellow bowling attack to thrash every RCB batsman who arrived at the pitch. CSK became the first team to appear twice on the IPL winners list twice in a row. Visit this link to check out the final scoreboard.

5. Winners of Fifth Season of IPL: Kolkata Knight Riders
Year | 2012 |
Finals | 27 May |
Stadium | M. A. Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai |
By the fifth edition, fans had grown loyal to selected franchises, therefore, the competition grew more fierce. This time, the chant – Korbo, Lorbo, Jeetbo! gained thrilling momentum. It is the motto of Shah Rukh Khan-owned franchise Kolkata Knight Riders which literally translates into, “we will do, we will fight, we will win.”

Moreover, a lot had changed in this team by the fifth edition. To make this season special, KKR had launched a marketing campaign – New Dawn. New Knights, with a new logo. At the start, the team’s future in the tournament looked bleak, having lost easy matches at the hands of Delhi Daredevils and Rajasthan Royals. Indeed, with much back and forth, KKR completed the first phase of seven matches and posted stable points on the table. Then arrived six successive wins on the back of complete team performance. Such a stupendous comeback shook everybody. By the end of the league stage, KKR found themselves contending at the second spot with 21 points.
The season rivals met at the semi-finals, it was Delhi Daredevils versus KKR. The Daredevils strived to repeat the first match results, however, the Knights had grown too strong to be kept silent. KKR’s superior bowling attack ensured victory over the Daredevils and the Knights entered finals for the first time. Here, they met the most favored champs – Chennai Super Kings. An experienced finale playing XI challenged the amateur Knights, posting a resounding score of 190. Manvinder Bisla, mere replacement to the great McCullum, stole the show at the Chennai home ground. Scoring 89 off 48 deliveries, Bisla helped KKR become one of the Indian Premier League winners. Check out the final scoreboard here.

6. Winners of Sixth Season of IPL: Mumbai Indians
Year | 2013 |
Finals | 26 May |
Stadium | Eden Gardens, Kolkata |
Sheer struggle and persistent efforts fueled the rise of Mumbai Indians. They had once reached finals before but this time, things were way different. The mentorship of three cricket legends – Sachin Tendulkar, Anil Kumble, and Jonty Rhodes nurtured every front of the Mumbaikers and it grew into an invincible team. Under the leadership of a newly appointed captain Rohit Sharma, MI regained its lost vision to register themselves in the IPL winners list, and that they did.

MI emerged with flying colors in the league stage. They comfortably made their way to Qualifiers 1. The long hailing IPL favorite CSK leaped on the Mumbaikers and got them all out at 144 with eight balls still remaining. Unfortunately, the blue caps couldn’t defend their meek total. Nonetheless, their resolution pushed for a close victory over the Royals in the second Qualifiers. MI jogged into the Eden Gardens with a ‘never give up’ attitude to play against their arch-rivals CSK.
As if to claim vengeance, the MI bowlers lashed out while defending a reasonable target of 149. The fall of wickets during the second innings resembled a highlights telecast. The last man standing, skipper MS Dhoni failed to chase down the total, due to a lack of support on the other end. Mumbai Indians, for the first time ever, emerged as Indian Premier League winners. Although CSK players Michael Hussey and Dwayne Bravo were declared the stars of the tournament for most runs and wickets, Mumbaikars owned the night. A new team team was added to IPL winners list. Take a look at the final scoreboard on this link.

7. Winners of Seventh Season of IPL: Kolkata Knight Riders
Year | 2014 |
Finals | 1 June |
Stadium | M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru |
Knights said, once more! The defending champs of the previous year couldn’t take the conquered feeling anymore. They had finished seventh and targeted the seventh season of IPL to make a tremendous resurgence.

KKR launched an onslaught on the defending champs Mumbai Indians in the very first match, held in UAE. In a sudden turn of events, everything grew grim for the Knights. They couldn’t keep pace after the first victory and fared poorly in the remaining matches held overseas. After the first phase of seven games, KKR managed to post lowly four points on the table. Coming back to India, KKR felt rejuvenated due to the efforts of Uthappa and Narine, both of whom were later declared season marvels for scoring most runs and picking most wickets, respectively.
Almost unexpectedly, KKR rose to second place by the end of the league stage. First Qualifiers were held at Eden Gardens against KXIP, which they won by 28 runs. Pumped up and ready to win, they stepped into the finals and again faced the determined Punjab boys. The Kings had decided to not let go of this golden opportunity to become Indian Premier League winners. They set a formidable target of 200, built upon Wriddhiman Saha’s century. The Knights got on with a tenuous start. After skipper Gambhir’s dismissal, Manish Pandey shouldered the responsibility, leading the game up to climax. He knocked a crucial 94 off 50 balls before Piyush Chawla finished off in style. With this, KKR became the second team to twice lift the trophy. Check out the final scoreboard here.

8. Winners of Eighth Season of IPL: Mumbai Indians
Year | 2015 |
Finals | 24 May |
Stadium | Eden Gardens, Kolkata |
The eighth edition of IPL has to be one of the most competitive tournaments in the T20 format to date. Not a single team could get over 18 points on the table, meaning the teams making the Playoffs cut had a vigorous journey. As if witnessing two teams with two-time winning tags bothered them, season 6 champions Mumbai Indians padded up to decimate every opponent. They wished to appear on the IPL winners list once again.

Dramatic comebacks are a trend in the IPL. And the Mumbaikars deserve the most credit. Losing four matches back to back due to weak bowling, MI seemed to offer no threat to the other competing teams. Tragically, MI lost their two bold batsmen Aaron Finch and Corey Anderson as a result of match injuries. To replace them, Trinidadian cricketer Lendl Simmons was brought in. This mid-season restructuring led to a stunning return of the Mumbaikars. They won nine sensational matches, out of the remaining ten matches of the league stage.
In the semi-finals, Simmons’ exciting fifty was clubbed with Pollard power. Together they brought CSK lions on their feet. After setting a substantial target of 188, the blue caps bowled out their opponent at 162. Again, like the old arch-nemesis, CSK fought back into the finals. Here, the complete MI team put on a show. From Simmons, skipper Sharma to finisher Pollard, all took turns to destroy the CSK bowling attack. They put on a massive target of 203 and the Super Kings, though with an opener’s fifty, failed to make the run chase. MI fulfilled its long-sought resolution and cherished a momentous victory, becoming the third team to enter the two-time IPL winners’ list. Check the final scoreboard here.

9. Winners of Ninth Season of IPL: Sunrisers Hyderabad
Year | 2016 |
Finals | 29 May |
Stadium | M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru |
After the Deccan Chargers left a vacuum in the tournament space, post-2012, a new Hyderabad-based franchise took its place – Sunrisers Hyderabad. Defending low totals came easy to SRH, at the same time, the batting line-up looked flimsy. One man army in the face of David Warner, a three-time orange cap winner now, held up the batting flank. Possibly this time, he could get his team to earn the honor of being among the Indian Premier League winners.

In 2016, they had a good mentorship in the guise of Tom Moody, Muttiah Muralitharan, and VVS Laxman. Rather than seeking to restructure the whole team, SRH planned to strategically improve on their batting side and keep up their bowling prowess. They entered the playoffs with a comfortable 16 points. In the Eliminator, SRH met the Knights. Indian hard-hitter Yuvi and Australian all-rounder Moises Henriques saved the day. With 162 runs on board, SRH bowling genius took over the Knights.
In Qualifiers 2, SRH was put to chase 163 by the season stars Gujarat Lions. Warner’s stupendous 93 off 58 balls helped SRH win the game. A defining moment shaped in the finale, when the tournament’s best batting side met the best bowling side, RCB versus SRH. Phenomenal strokes highlighted the essence of the grand finale. Gayle storm swept SRH bowlers in the first innings, supported by Virat Kohli’s much-needed half-century. RCB’s opening partnership ensured a one-sided match in the beginning. They successfully put up a daunting total of 200. Warner, leading in his side with great form, made a hopeful 69. On seeing the captain making an arduous effort, the SRH batting line-up joined in. Thus followed an unimaginable chase, bolstered by Ben Cutting’s spectacular 15-ball 39 at the finish. SRH became the sixth champ on the IPL winners list. Check the final scoreboard here.

10. Winners of Tenth Season of IPL: Mumbai Indians
Year | 2017 |
Finals | 21 May |
Stadium | Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium, Hyderabad |
Aspiring to make a comeback, the former two-time IPL winners got back in action for the tenth edition. Under the new mentorship of Mahela Jayawardene as Head Coach, the Sharma-led side looked stable and ready to conquer the league.

From the very start of the season, things fell in place for the Mumbai boys. Parthiv Patel and Jasprit Bumrah emerged as the best assets, and during this season MI made a fabulous streak of six victories back to back. Consequently, with 20 points, Mumbai appeared at the top of the Points Table by the end of the league stage. In Qualifiers 1, Rising Pune Supergiant, with the help of two half-centuries and Dhoni’s 40, put up a target of 163. Other than in-form opener Parthiv Patel’s fifty, nobody couldn’t even reach 20 against the RPS bowling attack. This meant the season leaders had to proceed to Qualifiers 2 and meet Gambhir-led Knights.
MI’s bowling attack pounced upon the Knights and ruthlessly bowled the whole team out at 107, with balls remaining. Eager to make history, they once again challenged the Supergiant. Both competent champs looked close into each others’ eyes and made every attempt at victory. This followed a low-scoring match as the former two-time champs were halted at 129. Defeat seemed inevitable for the Mumbaikars, while the IPL winners list looked for a new team. Steve Smith’s fifty almost ensured RPS’ victory. Suddenly, winds changed direction, incredible death over bowling turned the fate in MI’s favor. Mumbai Indians won by 1 run, a nail-biting endeavor came to an end. Therefore, MI became the first team to become Indian Premier League winners thrice. Check out the final scoreboard here.

After ten successful years, the Indian Premier League came out with its eleventh edition to rock the fans worldwide. It appeared as if victors challenged champs, the energy that drove Mumbai last year, was now fueling CSK as they urged to enter the IPL winners list for the third time.

CSK kicked off an enthusiastic campaign, grabbing a close win of one wicket over their archrivals Mumbai Indians. Thereon, the Super Kings won and lost matches successively, almost in a pattern. The batting line-up looked strong as ever while bowling kept deciding a few crucial matches for the Super Kings. In this edition, fans witnessed five sensational centuries, three of which embellished CSK batsmen’ profiles. Shane Watson had managed two while Ambati Rayudu bagged a massive one. CSK positioned itself in second place with 18 points, at the conclusion of the league stage.
The Sunrisers ran at the same pace to repeat its 2016 fate. However, they couldn’t manage a win over CSK throughout the league stage and now, met them in the Qualifiers 1. In this match, CSK faced difficulty against SRH, though Faf Du Plessis’s sustained innings of 67 runs, helped them win by 2 wickets. SRH made a comeback into the finals refusing to give up. The Sunrises batted surprisingly well this time, however, bowlers’ failed to contain Watson’s wrath. In fact, it was the finals where Watson had hit his second century of the tournament. Focus and consistency led CSK to lift the trophy, matching Mumbai’s record of becoming Indian Premier League winners for the third time. Check out the final scoreboard here.

In February 2019, before the beginning of the 12th season of IPL, Netflix released an eight-minute documentary on MI titled – Cricket Fever: Mumbai Indians. It showed how MI fought till the last breath in the 2018 season. Now, every soul watching the 2019 season of IPL sensed a feeling of vengeance among the heroes of Mumbai Indians. They had not forgotten their previous year’s performance, where they needed only one more victory to make the Playoffs cut. Given the CSK had paralleled their season 10 record, they resolved to recreate IPL history and again appear on the IPL winners list.

With almost a complete retained team and the addition of a few like Quinton de Kock, MI stormed into the tournament head-on. They didn’t take losses for an excuse and won every next match they could. At the conclusion of the league stage, MI had risen to the top of the Points Table with 18 points. Rahul Chahar’s exceptional economy bowling mesmerized MI’s archrivals CSK at the Qualifiers 1. Mumbai’s bowling attack halted the yellow helmets at 132 and won the match with six wickets in hand.
In the finals, CSK fought back. It was like Superman versus Batman. The defending champs were put to chase an achievable target of 150. Pollard power ensured this defendable total. Next arrived the wonder man Watson! Only the other opener, du Plessis, could cross the 20 run mark in this fateful match. The target seemed easy-peasy when Watson reached. But then he lost the crease and fell victim to a close Krunal Pandya-devised runout. History was written, once again by the Mumbai Indians. At present, MI remains the only team to be Indian Premier League winners for the fourth time. Check the final scoreboard here.

13. Winners of Thirteenth Season of IPL: Mumbai Indians
Year | 2020 |
Finals | 10 November |
Stadium | International Cricket Stadium, Dubai |
The year 2020 turned the lives of people upside down. With the emergence of an unknown virus, everything came to a standstill in order to stem its dynamic spread. For this very reason, the thirteenth season of IPL was not conducted during the months of April and May. Instead, the league replaced the T20 World Cup and featured in the months starting from September to November. This time it felt like a new team would register its name on the IPL winners list.

The defending champions, Mumbai Indians got on with a shaky start in this season. Greater damage came in the form of a sudden on-field injury of the skipper Rohit Sharma. Nonetheless, MI’s balanced playing eleven led by Pollard achieved much success in the second half of the league stage. In the end, MI topped the Points Table securing a comfortable 18 points.
The blue cap champs met the rising stars of Delhi Capitals in Qualifiers 1. Throughout the season, DC had showcased an exceptional match-winning spirit and looked ready to take on MI. Unsurprisingly, they failed miserably against the Mumbaikars. MI boys exhibited a team performance with two middle-order half-centuries, opening 40 and finishing 14-ball 37 by Hardik Pandya. At the finals, DC attempted a revenge plot but lost their power player Stoinis in the very first ball. Later, the Pant-Iyer partnership somehow broke free of the patchy start and posted a good target of 157. Confident DC boys met a harsh fate. The most unexpected comeback of skipper Sharma made an appearance in the run-chase. His innings of 68 runs meant that MI lifted the Indian Premier League winners trophy for the fifth, leaving a new historical marker. Check out the final scoreboard here.
