It is the one of the only two jail museums in India, the other being in Andamans. The jail museum is developed from a real prison from the time of the British era. Established in 1849, the prison had 54 cellular cells. A separate section of the prison was used for harsh punishment. There is no source for light or ventilation inside the cells of this prison. During the Irish mutiny, Mahatma Gandhi stayed in this prison to support the Irish community. After Independence, the place was converted into a museum with the help of the army.
