The first instalment of this series begins with Bella, a seventeen-year-old who moves in with her father, Charlie. Charlie, played by Billy Burke, is a police chief who resides in Forks, Washington. She feels an immediate attraction towards Edward Cullen, whom she sees in her new school. Bella is not impressed but intrigued by his push-and-pull attitude and tries to find out what his opinion is of her and sort of guesses that he is a vampire, and he confirms her theory of him being a 1000-year-old vampire. Obviously, this piece of information raises a whole lot of issues, a huge part of which is that Edward and his vampire buddies find Bella’s blood irresistible. Kristen Stewart plays the role of Bella. Robert Pattinson portrays Edward Cullen.
In spite of the plethora of issues, Edward and Bella cannot stop themselves from falling for each other. Thus, Bella gets introduced to the Cullen family and the supernatural world. The Cullen family has Carlisle and Esme, who act as parent figures. Emmett, Rosalie, Jasper and Alice are Edward’s adoptive siblings. Bella’s presence in the Cullen family alerts a more lethal vampire family who makes Bella their target. New Moon picks up where Twilight left things off, but it does not carry forward the positive ending of Twilight. Things take a dark turn when Bella cuts her hand on paper at a birthday party at the Cullens’ house. This causes Jasper to lose control, and he attempts to drink Bella’s blood. The Cullens, although, take control of the situation before anything happens. But Edward, fearing for Bella’s safety, breaks up with her and leaves Forks. He and his family put considerable distance between them and Bella as her blood is too enticing for them. Bella is understandably heartbroken and has a hard time coping with the loss. She even starts behaving erratically and tries out dangerous activities to fill her void.
At this point in the movie, Bella strikes up a friendship with Jacob Black, played by Taylor Lautner. He becomes her partner in the daredevil antics and this really helps her move beyond her depression. Even though she misses Edward greatly, her blossoming friendship with Jacob helps her find happiness in her life. Things take a turn when one day Jacob becomes sick, after which he returns completely transformed. It isn’t too long before Bella gets to know his secret – that he is a werewolf. And he is not just the one; the other Quileute tribe’s members are too. She also learns that there is a long-standing rife between the vampires and werewolves, but the tribe has a peace treaty with the Cullens.
At the culmination of both the movie and novel, Bella and Edward get reunited. We are also introduced to the Volturi, who are regarded as royals in the vampire clan. They are high-ranking, powerful, and elite ancient beings who write the laws that vampire society has to follow. Alice, with the gift of foresight, sees a vision where Bella jumps off a cliff. Edward, naturally thinking that Bella has committed suicide, refuses to live in a world where Bella isn’t alive. He decides to reveal that he is a vampire to a crowd in the Italian square. This will compel Volturi to execute him for exposing their secret. Alice and Bella reach Edward in the nick of time and stop him from carrying out his plan. But due to this, Volturi becomes aware that Bella, a human, knows about the vampiric world. They give Edward and Bella an ultimatum – Bella has to become a vampire or she has to be killed.
New Moon broke the record for the biggest midnight opening in the history of the box office in Canada and the United States. Harry Potter and The Half-Blood Prince held the record, previously, earning $22.2 million. New Moon earned about $26.3 million. Overall, the movie earned $570 million worldwide.

The next movie in the saga is called Eclipse, which starts with Edward and Bella trying to cope with the ultimatum given by the Volturi – she has to be turned as she has incriminating knowledge about the existence of vampiric society. It puts strain on their relationship. Edward comes on board with the subject of Bella being a vampire only if she agrees to marry him. Bella is not keen on marrying at such a young age. But before they can have a proper conversation about it, Victoria returns to take revenge on the Cullens and Bella as they have killed her lover, James, as shown in the first movie. She even arms herself with newborn vampires for this purpose. Bryce Dallas Howard plays Victoria in this film; the role was previously Rachelle Lefevre’s.
The Quileute tribe and the Cullens team up together to fight off Victoria’s army. Edward, Jacob and Bella go for a camping hideout during the battle. Jacob, with his heightened hearing ability, comes to know about Bella and Edward’s engagement. He is furious and tries to storm off, but Bella stops him by asking him to kiss her. As he kisses her, Bella realises that she is in love with him too. It’s just that her love for Edward is stronger.
The band of werewolves and Cullens successfully defeat Victoria and his army. Jacob comes to terms with Edward and Bella’s engagement and agrees not to come in between them. The movie ends with Edward and Bella telling Charlie about the engagement.
Eclipse was the only film in the Twilight franchise to release in IMAX. It earned $30 million on its opening weekend and held the record for the biggest midnight opening in the box office history of Canada and the USA. In 2011, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 broke the record. Eclipse earned 698.4 million in total.

Breaking Dawn – Part 1 begins a couple of months after the last movie, Eclipse, ended. Bella and Edward are getting married, and Jacob shows up as a surprise for Bella. Everything is nice and sweet between them until he becomes aware that Edward and Bella plan to consummate their marriage when they are honeymooning. More importantly, Bella will be a human when they consummate – a decision that could get Bella killed.
Bella doesn’t die, but she gets pregnant with Edward’s child – a phenomenon that is unheard of in the vampire world. They name their child Renesmee, whose growth progresses way too fast, which affects Bella’s health tremendously. When Jacob learns about Bella’s pregnancy, he is furious as the future baby is posing a threat to Bella’s life and everyone around her. This vampire-hybrid child also causes a rift between the werewolf pack, who argue over the best way to remove the threat that they think Bella’s child poses.
Bella brushes with death during Renesmee’s birth, which forces Edward to turn her. Jacob, all this while, has been biding his time, and just after the birth, he tries to kill the child. But he imprints on Renesmee the moment his eyes lock on her. “Imprinting” is basically how werewolves of the Quileute tribe find their soul mates. Jacob reasons that Renesmee is the reason why he was so drawn to Bella in the first place; she was his soul mate’s future mother. Jacob’s imprinting on Renesmee also guarantees her safety. The law of the Quileute tribe prohibits harming or killing anyone who has been imprinted by a member. But, Renesmee is not put of Volturi’s harm, which forms the crux of the next film. The post-credit scene from Breaking Dawn Part 1 teases their return.
Breaking Dawn grossed $291 million on its opening weekend worldwide – the best in its franchise. Moreover, it earned $500 million in just 12 days, which was another record for the saga. It ranks fourth in the highest-grossing movie category in 2011. The film is also the second highest-earning film in the Twilight saga. In total, Breaking Dawn Part 1 earned $712 million worldwide.

The final instalment of this saga begins with Bella waking up as a vampire. Edward had turned her as she was dying from giving birth to Renesmee. She deals with her transformation excellently and handles all the issues that come with it better than everyone. Bella is understandably furious when she comes to know that Jacob has mated her newborn daughter. She refuses to accept it and only comes to terms with it when Jacob helps Bella to explain things to Charlie by revealing his werewolf form to him.
Meanwhile, Renesmee keeps on growing way too fast, and Volturi soon comes to know about her existence. They think of her to be an “immortal child” – a human child who has been transformed into a vampire and is forced to stay in that physical and mental state forever eternally. The Volturi considers immortal children a taboo, so they arrive to “kill” her, so to speak. To stand against the Volturi, Bella and Edward recruit vampires from all over the world to prove to them that Renesmee is entirely different. She is a vampire-human hybrid child, which is something very much different from an immortal child. All this culminates with Alice showing them a vision where a battle ensues where Jasper, Carlisle, and many high-ranking Volturi vampires get killed if the Volturi doesn’t take the Cullens at their word. She also introduces a final witness, Nahuel, another vampire hybrid child who is proof that Renesmee can have peaceful growth. J. D Pardo plays Nahuel.
The movie ends with one of Alice’s visions, one which shows everyone happy and living peacefully. There is also a love profession between Edward and Bella, who vow to stay together for all eternity.
The movie received mixed reactions from critics, but it did nothing to hinder its box office success. Its production budget was $136 million, and it grossed almost $830 million worldwide. It is the highest-grossing movie in the series and ranks sixth in the highest-grossing film category of 2012.
